She was one in a tribe of ten children, born in 1883 and raised in Portland, Oregon. After dabbling with photography for a few years at art school out East, she returned to Washington and began her studies at UW/Seattle, focusing more on chemistry than art or photography.
With a small flip of a switch, she combined her interest in chemistry with her love of photography! She began photographing plants for the botany department and true to her chemistry roots, she actually focused as much on the printing process as she did on composition.
