Folio Developement Lesson 2 - 23.2.2010

During lesson two we were required to bring in some photographs that inspire us, show what direction we would like to take or that we just really liked. A few people also took the chance to show some of their own work which was fantastic to get a taste of my classmates creativity! Some showed works from a single photographer, others from a wide variety. A choose to share a photographer who i have only just noticed in the last few weeks. His name is Andrew Zuckerman and i believe he has very recognisable photographs.

As i looked through more of his work i noticed that i had seen some of his portraits before in a book called Wisdom that received a bit of media attention when it was brought out in 2008. It was designed to feature prominent figures and the idea behind it was that each generation has something to pass on to the next. It features portraits of Billy Connolly, Clint Eastwood, Bryce Courtney and many more. This is not what initially attracted me to his work though, whilst browsing through Dymocks trying to find a book that does not involve werewolves and vampires the size of his book is what first caught my eye. A big white book with a large bird on the front surrounded by a beautiful crisp clean white. His works are definitely enhanced but i think it adds a surreal, yet still life like quality to it. His style is easily recognisable because of how he makes the animal or person the sole focus of the photograph. They are shot simply, with a white background. I believe this allows the viewer to see the individual more clearly without being distracted by background surroundings.

I would love to get my hands on one of his books in the near future and urge everyone to have a look at his work. You can also find short films of the animals he takes photographs of, this is also creatively shot with his trademark white background, giving a sense of the creatures personality. His website is below otherwise i will post a few of my favourites. =]

Andrew Zuckerman's official website is definitely worth taking a look at. It can be found at: http://www.andrewzuckerman.com
